> **What is the #1 thing you want to learn that would change your life?**
> **What project would help you learn it?**
> **Who are the most voracious learners you know? How could you involve them in the project?**
> **How can you structure the project to maximize learning?** (evolving curiosity, incentives, etc)
> **What steps can you take now to make it a reality?**
# The Learning Loop
The Learning Loop is the baseline to accelerate all learning. Because you can incrase your learning by:
- Going through the loop faster
- Spending more time
- Compounding over time
The first one is your biggest leverage.
**Learning Loop 101:**
1. Information: Collect data
2. Algorithms: Make sense of the data
3. Experimentation: Try things out
4. Feedback: Improve for next time
It's critical to identify your weakest link in the Learning Loop and to work it through.
# Adopting The Learning Lifestyle
## Make Time For Learning
You can dedicate time for learning at different scales:
- Decade: Take sabbatic years to learn.
- Year: Take holidays dedicated to learning.
- Project: Pick your projects for their learning value.
- Week: Dedicate 5-hour per week to learn.
- Day: See below.
### Work Session
**ABC Model Of Development**
A is the Core Activity (your work). It should represent 80% of your time.
B is designed to improve A's capabilities. For instance, Learning will improve your ability to Work and should represent 15% of your time.
C is designed to improve B's capabilities. Learning How To Learn improves your ability to Learn and should represent 5% of your time.
Reflection should take a huge place in the learning process, as 1/33 of your learning time dedicated to it will incrase retention by 20%.
**Exercise**
Identify the work session type in your weekly schedule that would benefit the most from a reflection session.
Put a 15-min time block in your calendar.
Example for myself:
**Writing my daily email**
Ask yourself the following questions:
**Most Important Question:**
- Where would I stop engaging with this email as a reader?
**Working process:**
- What did I intend?
- What happened ?
**Retrospective:**
- Mistake: Does this happen in other areas?
- How can I avoid it?
- Success: What caused the success? How can I generalize it?
**Feedback:**
- Use an AI prompt to get immediate feedback.
### Work Day
**Double Time**
Use double-time to stack Light Learning on top of other activities such as:
- Commute
- Chores
- Workout
- And so on.
For content-based learning, you should have two queues:
1. Story or conversation-based content for low energy times
2. Technical knowledge and deep thinking
To fill your queue, use:
- Top Curators
- Fractal Reading
- People
For people-based learning, simply identify people from your network that love learning. Engage with them by sending them voice notes about what you learn (Explanation Effect) and encourage them to reciprocate.
**Book Summaries**
A great book summary should include:
- My Understanding
- Key Questions
- Personal Reflection
- Key Ideas
- Resources
- Contents
- Highlights
## Embrace Curiosity
Goal function algorithm : Optimize for goal
Novelty algorithm : Optimize for novelty
We should :
**Optimize For Excitement**
- Think Binge-Watching For Learning.
- Learning To Love Learning Is The #1 Skill For Learning How To Learn.

## Most Important Learning Habit: Sleep
### Sleep Habit
- Helps you sleep better and at consistent time.
- Gives you energy for the following day.
- Learn in your sleep. Gives your mind something to work on while you're asleep.
- Replace your least productive time with your most productive time.
Fatigue = Distraction
### Sub-Habits To Build
- Stop checking email, scrolling through social media, and working
- Have a habit that gets you in bed & relaxing (i.e., book, journaling)
- **Wake up naturally (ie - sun or light alarm)**
- Stopping activities
- Journal
- Hide computer
- Block apps
- Getting into bed
### What activites tend to keep your mind racing at night?
- Video games
- Reading utilitarian books
- Work
- Arguments
### EOD Activities
- Walk
- Plan your next day
- Warm shower
- Gratitude Journal
### Which apps or websites are most distracting for you?
- Social networks
- YouTube
- Beeper

### Bed questions
These are some of the questions that Reid Hoffman uses:
- What are the kind of key things that might be constraints on a solution, or might be the attributes of a solution?
- What are the tools or assets I might have?
- What are the key things that I want to think about?
- What do I want to solve creatively?
Here’s from Josh Waitzkin:
- What are all of the problems/puzzles you’re trying to figure out right now?
- Which one is the most important?
- What is your #1 question about it?
And Stephen Laberge (Stanford):
- Ask yourself if you are dreaming during the day
- Make regular checks of whether your surroundings are functioning under waking laws of physics.
- This habit will eventually carry over into dreaming.
What questions will you ask yourself at night time?
When will you ask them? (Working on thinking through it a little too)
### Wakeup
- What time do you want to go to bed?
- What time do you wanna set your alarm for?
- How will you capture your insights in the morning while still in bed?
- How will you get your energy up before jumping into learning?
- What is the most important and hard learning you can do?
### Ideal habits
- Stopping habits
- Bed habits
- Wake up habits
What's your one thing? How can you absolutely guarantee it will happen?

## Leveraging Habits
Use overwhelming force to make important habits happen. Use more efforts than what you think you need.
Plan for multiple iterations.
Iterate for the habit to work. Identify root causes. It's all problem solving. Experimentation.
- Diagnose root cause
- Plan
- Act
Tools to impement habits:
- Tiny Habits
- Cue-Habit-Reward
- Artificial Urgency
- Make It Social
- Pre-Mortem
- Energy-Focus-Clarity (EFC)
- Competing Commitments
- Root Cause Analysis
- Identity Shift
- Force Model
- Procrastination Equation
- Eat A Frog
A good way to get started is to ICE which habit to implement.
## Make your habits bulletproof
### Competing commitments
Sometimes, we prioritize a less important action over the most important action. Or we procrastinate on the said important action.
This is called resistance.
There are three ways to work around it:
1. Eliminate the resistance
2. Ignore the resistance
3. Probe the resistance
Probing is the way to go, because it's a more durable and comprehensive approach.
To solve this, we can use this framework:
1. **The Conflict:** Think of a learning area where you're felling conflicted where you have a big learning goal, but you're not making progress.
Example: Entrepreneurship
2. **Commitment:** What is your commitment or improvement goal?
Example: I am committed to getting better at building wealth.
3. **Action:** What are you doing instead or not doing?
Example: (i) Trying to follow a pre-made model (JK Molina) instead of making my own experiences. (ii) Spending idle time on YouTube or other stuff.
4. **Worry Box:** Name the fears and worries that come up when you imagine doing the opposite of each things in your previous question.
Example: (i) Fear of failure. (ii) I might not know where to start.
5. **Competing Commitments:** What self-protective, hidden commitments stands behind each of your fears and worries?
Example: (i) Following a map instead of building one. (ii) Feeling safe and avoiding challenges.
6. **Big Assumptions:** When you look over all that you've uncovered, and especially your hidden commitments, what does it suggest about your assumptions? Generate as many assumpations as you can.
Example: I feel like I'm gonna fail if I make a map of my own. I feel like I'm unable to produce real value. I feel like a fraud. I feel like challenging myself is not necessary, that being average is a better way. I feel like I'm not as smart as most people think I am. I feel like I won't be able to stick to a goal or project on the long run.
Now experiment with assumptions: how can you get data and design experiments to find out if these assumptions are true or false.
Example: To check if I can make a map of my own or not, I need to get ONE person to purchase or engage with something I produce that is aligned with my infinite game goal.
### Energy-Focus-Clarity (EFC)
At all times, you can do three things to push yourself to take action:
1. Get your energy up
2. Increase your focus and eliminate distractions
3. Have clarity on what you want to learn (or to do)
Let's follow the steps:
1. Rate your energy on a 1-10 scale (currently 8). Some form of dancing or movement can really help with this (Fitness Fusion). Find your own ritual to get your energy up.
2. Remove distractions, clean stuff, use bathroom, put your phone away, etc.
3. What specifically do you want to do? How? What is the cost of not doing it, now and later? What is the benefit of doing it? Now and later?
### Root Cause Analysis
Avoiding problems usually cause a blow up and it's then almost impossible to handle them.
You should keep a problem log (pain button).
Then have a weekly root cause analysis call or thinking time.
- Choose one exploding problem
- Identify its root causes
- Create a plan to deal with it
### Force Model
Any change is subject to force pushing for it and forces resisting it. For change to happen, forces pushing must be more important than forces resisting.
> What is a learning habit that I have trouble following through on?
Reading and taking notes on a daily basis.
> (What forces are propelling the change?)
> What forces are keeping you the same?
- Time constraint
- Not knowing what to read
- Poorly structured Learning Hour
- **Lack of interest for the book at hand**
> (How can you increase the forces for change?)
> How can you reduce the forces holding you in place? How can you reduce that force?
- Applying a "Hell Yes Or No" principle.
- Doing a better job at Fractal Reading the book beforehand.
- Only trying to get to the gist of each book.
- Immediately replacing a book I'm not intensely interested about.
> What is something small you can do right now to operationalize what you just wrote down?
Having a weekly dedicated "Swipe Time" for books, podcasts and articles.
### The Procrastination Equation
Coming from [[Piers Steel]] it basically states that procrastination follows a simple equation:
(Expectancy x Value) / (Impulsiveness x Delay)
Expectancy = How can you increase the likelihood that the action will pay off?
Value = How can you get more insight on the benefit of completing the action?
Impulsiveness = How can you eliminate distraction?
Delay = How can you reduce the delay between the action and the reward?
You can use it to make habits you want more likely and habits you don't want less likely.
> Pick one learning habit to add and another that is getting in the way of your learning. Use the procrastination equation to increase the likelihood of learning habit and reduce the likelihood of the other habit.
- Taking notes after a learning session (+): I will browse my Garden as part of my Weekly Swipe Time to get a better sense of the value of my notes.
- Consuming short-form content (-): I will remove YouTube history and switch to consuming podcasts elsewhere.
### Eat A Frog
From Mark Twain: very simply, do the most difficult task and thinking in the morning, and keep what's easier for the afternoon.
Morning, you are high energy and highly focused.
Afternoon is lower energy, you are more creative and less focused.
Start by getting you energy and focus up (meditation, movement), then get started with a Tiny Habit and you're ready to roll!
### Behavioral Microscopy
Being in the driver's seat is absolutely not objective. That's why we need data, to get in a third's person point of view.
Examples:
- My sleep is bad > My Whoop sleep score is X% on average over the past 30 days.
- I'm eating too much > I'm consuming X calories, while my caloric need is Y.
- I spend too much money > I spent X% of what I earned last month.
### Self-Compassion
From Kristin Neff:
We are more productive when we display self-kindness. Imagine you are someone else, and give advice to yourself. For instance, write to yourself a self-compassion letter.
## Diagnose
Go through a frequent habit check-in:
- Compared to your expectation, how has your learning habit been going?
- What has worked really well?
- What was the root cause of what worked well?
- What has not worked really well?
- What was the root cause of what didn't work well?
Do either a daily or weekly reflection - the most frequent the better. You could for instance have a tracker for EOD.
# Breakthrough Knowledge
> "It's not information overload, it's filter failure." Clay Shirky
## Understanding Breakthrough Knowledge
There are a couple main problems about learning:
1. **Junk Learning:** the internet is a junk learning machine, which makes it really hard to learn appropriately nowadays. We're largely influenced by our news feed and algorithms from big social media platforms.
2. **Lack of Clarity:** if you don't know precisely what you're looking for, you will get nowhere and the internet will capture your brain. You should be deliberate (Superfood Learning) instead of staying in autopilot.
What we should look for is Superfood Learning :
- Best of all time
- Rare
- Something we haven't considered
There are four models for finding Superfood Learning:
1. Goals: realize your most important values
2. Mental Models: learn cross-disciplinary knowledge that lasts forever
3. Curiosity: tap into intrinsic motivation and unconscious wisdom
4. Opportunities: recognize and capiltalize upon short-term opportunities
For the latest, apply the...
**Hockey Stick Rule:** if something is increasing exponentially in the form of a hockey stick, explore for 10 hours to define if you should explore more now or in the future.
If you decide to explore:
- Read about it
- Get skin in the game
- Use the tool
- Purchase the good
Thinking questions to find some hockey stick opportunities:
- What are the exponentially growing trends in your field?
- Which are the most important to you? (1-10)
- What's the likely inflection point? (traction, price, taste, user, interface)
- When will that inflection point happen?
- What is the most important and time-sensitive opportunity for you?
- What is a resource that you could purchase on it?
## Goal Learning
### Value-Based Approach To Goal Setting
Most people approach goal like this: Goal > Strategy > Tactic
The best approach looks more like: **Value** > Goal > Strategy > Tactic
The value part is the key part of the equation because:
1. It's high leverage
2. It's extremely motivating
3. It gives you a leadership edge
4. The results compound if you start early
5. Focuses your attention and helps with information overwhelm
A great point to get started is to ask yourself:
What is value?
List 5+ definitions of value.
1. Monetary value is how much a good or service is worth.
2. It's rules for a living.
3. It's pain removal.
4. It's the amount of mental space a thing has in everyone's head.
5. It's the good something brings your minus the bad it also brings you.
What is your own model of value?
What things really matter to you? Why?
- Knowledge
- Experiences
- Awe
- Compassion
- Growth
- Legacy
- Health
- Performance
- Happiness
- Balance
- Flow
What are different models of value?
List your most important values in a prioritized order.
If you were born today, what would you first pursue? And then what? Etc.
1. Probably basic income
2. Then health
3. Then relationships
4. Then knowledge
5. Then medium income
6. Then flow & alignment in my life
7. Finally experiences
8. Performance
9. High income at this stage
10. And awe is icing on the cake
Look at your schedule and media diet. What are you not doing? What does all of this say about your values?
Is there a mismatch? Can you reduce the mismatch?
## GOMAT Model
### Goal
> What are all the ways you could most fully live out your #1 value?
- Read everyday
- Share what I learn online and offline
- Find something I could get paid for that would be pure fun to me
> What's the one thing you could accomplish toward your #1 value that would make anything easier?
### Obstacles
> What are all of the obstacles?
- I don't know how to reliably get attention online.
- I struggle to take notes that I really use.
- I struggle to have personal ideas emerging.
> Wnat's the #1 obstacle?
### Mentor
`
> Who has overcome that obstacle to achieve that goal because of skill?
- Michael Simmons
- Alex & Books
- Joseph Everett
### Artifacts
> What are the relevant artifacts they have left behind? (book, speech, article, interview)
- Blockbuster Blueprint (MS)
- Mental Model Club (MS)
- Learning Ritual (MS)
> Which three would be the best to focus on?
### Technique
> What is a technique you can use?
Series of questions.
Learning because it's fun, while avoiding the critical stuff.
## Breakthrough Knowledge Models

2. Publish: Put the content on a platform
3. Funnel: Develop customer (lead magnet, webinar, free course)
4. Monetize: Charge money (coaching, speaking, subscription, course, book, product)
## How It Applies To Thought Leadership
As a Thought Leader, Knowledge is your #1 Asset. You should spent 80% of your time researching, reflecting and experimenting.
And come up with ideas that rise above the noise.
It's your lasting competitive advantage.
When you build your base of Rare and Valuable knowledge, the number of building blocks grows linearly. But the number of combinations grows exponentially.
As your knowledge grows, you become aware of interstices where there should be a word but isn't - which is what makes blockbuster ideas possible.
Your idea can't sound like something others have read. It needs to stand out 10x.
## The Knowledge Models
> "It is important to view knowledge as sort of a semantic tree — make sure you understand the fundamental principles . . . the trunk and big branches, before you get into the leaves/details or there is nothing for them to hang onto." - Musk
Models simplify knowledge like clothes hangers simplify a closet.
> "It's in the nature of foundations, that the foundations in one field are also the foundations other fields…The way that we reach many truths is by understanding things more deeply and therefore more broadly. That's the nature of the concept of a foundation… just as in architecture, all buildings all literally stand on the same foundation; namely the earth. All buildings stand on the same theoretical base; namely the laws of physics and the laws of engineering and architecture." - David Deutsch
Think in 2D : Horizontal + Vertical
When you go both deep enough (vertically) and across disciplines (horizontally) you start to see how everything is interconnected, like branches and leaves on a tree.
- You get to learn the knowledge you can apply across more areas
- To learn knowledge that is more stable
- To improve your memory because everything is connected
- To be more creative because you see things others don’t
### To Get Started With Models :
1. Learn Multiple Models
2. Learn Multiple Models From Multiple Disciplines
3. Focus On Big Ideas From The Big Disciplines (20% Of Models Create 80% Of The Results)
4. Use A Checklist To Ensure You’re Factoring in the Right Models
Goals = GOMAT
Opps = Hockey Stick Rule
Models = Now
Curiosity = (Lifestyle)
# Selling Your Sawdust
## The Explanation Effect
### The Explanation Effect Pyramid
Most people collect information, but don't spend much time actually processing it.
> "The person who says he knows what he thinks but cannot express it usually does not know what he thinks." - Mortimer Adler
Teaching to someone else is a form of spaced repetition, effectively countering the Ebbinghaus Forgetting Curve.
This is a whole different mindset, and it deeply impacts your behaviour:
- While you learn
- When you teach
- After you taught
The pyramid looks like this:
1. Self-Explain
2. Explain To A Simulated Other
3. Conversation & Dialogue
4. Informal Teaching
5. Full Spectrum Teaching
6. Professional Teaching
Moving up in the pyramid unlocks new and exponential types of values.
#### Self-Explain
HEA Hack for note-taking: Highlight > Explain > Apply
> What's the biggest idea you've learned in the last week or month?
I'm a map maker, not a map follower.
> Explain it in 1-2 sentences.
Someone else's systems are perfect for this someone else, but not for you. To build successful systems, you have to pick elements from everyone and consolidate them into something designed for you specifically.
> What are a few ways this could be applied to your life?
- Build my own learning system.
- Formulate my own business model.
> What's one thing you can do to build the habit of self-explaining?
Write down 1-2 sentences per concept maximum.
Try a lot of tools to take notes and see which ones you gravitate towards using.

Make a list of people to pull out of your hat and have an imaginary conversation whenver you need (or a full council if necessary).
Idea: I could probably emulate them with AI!
#### Learning Network (Conversation & Dialogue)
The principle is simple.
Create more reciprocal "teaching opportunities" with people you spend the most time with:
- Kids
- Spouse
- Co-workers
- Network
- Friends
- Clients
To filter people who enter your learning network with a crystal clear model:
- Polymath
- Voracious Learner
- Amazing Results
- Great Teacher
- Vulnerability
- Giving
- Long-Term Potential
- Chemistry
## Sell Your Sawdust
Turn the by-products of your learning process into a product.
This way, you get:
1. **Multiple Outputs:** Don't focus one a single output (heavylift). Instead, create value at each stage of the process.
2. **Learn In Public:** Don't take notes just for yourself. Take notes for colleagues, friends and customers.
There are four major categories of selling your sawdust:
1. Recommendations (books or highlights) (Clarify, Queue, Collect, Clip, Categorize)
Summaries & Explainers (Contextualize)
1. Topic (person, field, outcome)
2. Type (podcasts, books, studies)
3. Expression (audio, video, text, visual)
4. Platform (Amazon, YouTube, etc.)
> What are you most excited about learning ?
I love powerful reframing and analogies.
> What is most valuable to others?
Reframing, actionable advice, taking a step back.
> What is rare?
Lindy and foundational knowledge. Technical knowledge. People are mostly reading low effort, most recent books.
To find rare knowledge:
- Academic research
- Other industries (polymath)
- What do you wish was out there, but not?
- Data sources for platform learning
> What content format will you focus on?
Books, podcasts, people.
1. Trademark Ideas (Combine, Coin)
2. How To (Application, Results)
Types of value (4Mat):
- Why (it's important, personal relevance)
- What (it is, concepts simplified)
- How (to apply it)
- What if (what impact for the future)
> Where will you post?
- Newsletter
- Blog
- Twitter
- LinkedIn
## Research Brief
### Recap
There is always time at a multi-level. If you can find the time, you can iterate and increase your learning rate, which will have a profound impact on your life.
Many habits can help you as tools to improve your learning and make it happen more consistently (Checklist).
**The Learning Loop:**
1. Information
2. Algorithms
3. Experimentation
4. Feedback
**Learning Models:**
- Opportunities (Hockey Stick)
- Goals (GOMAT)
- Models
- Curiosity (FUNRUCC)
**Sources of information:**
P = People (Learning Network)
I = Information (video, books, articles, podcasts)
P = Platform Learning (data)
E = Experiences (diversifying experiences)
**Levels of teaching:**
1. Self-explanation
2. Explaining to a simulated other
3. Conversation / dialogue
4. Informal teaching
5. Full spectrum teaching
6. Professional teaching
### Note System
HEA Hack: Highlight, Explain, Highlight
Research > Research Brief (IP) > Final Format: either understable and attractive content or stuff people woudl pay for.
To make stuff understandable:
- Keywords
- Big Ideas
- Resources
- Thought Leaders
- Questions
And to make it attractive:
- Hooks (Title & Intro)
- Quotes
- Celebrities / Case Studies
- Quick Wins
To find great materials: use very large samples, buy many books, etc. Microsoft Research is great to find stuff as well for academics.
Bird's Eye View:
1. Fractal Reading
2. Go deeper on what's interesting
3. When you find a book HELL YES, read every page as all of them are valuable
4. Highlight, go through it, process it
Fractal Reading:
1. Get 2-3 book summaries
2. Look for author presentations
3. Read Amazon reviews
4. Read the table of contents and the first & last chapters
# 10,000 Experiment Rule
## WOOP Framework
Create 20-30 titles per article.
### Wish
> What is the #1 learning **habit** you want to adopt?
Reading every day.
> What is the #1 **topic** you want to focus on? (get specific)
Writing.
> What is the #1 **learning hack** you want to improve at?
Double-time.
### Outcome
> What is the #1 outcome you want from your **learning habit?**
Generating more innovative ideas.
> What is the #1 outcome you want from focusing on your **topic?** (get specific)
Building a world-class newsletter.
> What is the #1 outcome you want from your **learning hack?**
Turning otherwise "useless" moments into hidden gems.
### Obstacle
> What is the #1 obstacle to following through on your **learning habit?**
Lack of time. When the day starts to unfold, I hardly have time or energy to actually read.
> What is the #1 obstacle to focusing on your **topic?**
I think I get distracted a lot! I get bored quickly.
> What is the #1 obstacle to following through on your **learning hack?**
Sometimes I feel the need to listen to some music.
### Plan
> What’s your rock solid plan to follow through on your **learning habit?**
Really read first thing in the morning, directly after breakfast, getting dressed and baseline logistic stuff.
> What’s your rock solid plan to follow through on your **topic?**
Buy a couple more books on my topic, so that I have non-boring choices at hand. Also, lock specific days and/or targets per week to dedicate to learning how to write.
> What’s your rock solid plan to follow through on your **learning hack?**
Allow myself to listen to music during warmup and cooldown, but listen to educative stuff during the core set.
